“I cannot recommend Gracie Barra Bakersfield highly enough!”

What is Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art. You learn how to control and defend yourself using technique instead of strength.

That means it works no matter your age, size or fitness level.

Why Adults Start Jiu-Jitsu

Most people don't walk in because everything's going well. Something's not working, and they're looking for a change.

  • Same old routine

Same workout, same treadmill, same playlist. You're going through the motions.

  • No direction

You're not struggling, but you're not growing either. No challenge, no progress, just coasting.

  • Running on empty

The stress from work follows you home and nothing in your week actually helps you switch off.

  • Missing your people

Your social life shrunk without you noticing. No group that's yours.

    Worth Showing Up For

You'll train with the same people every week. They'll push you, help you and expect you to show up.

It stops being just a session and starts being your team.

    A Workout That Is Fun

You'll be too busy learning and problem-solving to notice how hard you work. Every session is different.

You'll leave tired, sharp and wondering when you can come back.

Already In Your Element?

Some people want a new challenge.

If you haven't found anything that makes you think, adapt and earn every inch of progress. BJJ is that. You can't shortcut it.

You'll be humbled, hooked and back within a week.

Worried about Injury?

Any physical activity carries some risk. But the way we train keeps that risk as low as possible.

You start with technique and drilling before any live sparring.

If something doesn't feel right, you tap and it stops.

Before you talk yourself out of it

Worried about starting?

  • I'm not fit enough

You don't need to be. Most people who start aren't. The fitness comes from the training itself. You just need to show up.

  • I'll embarrass myself

Nobody's watching you the way you think they are. Everyone's too busy learning themselves.

  • I don't have enough time

Most of our members train two times a week for an hour. If you can find time for a Netflix episode, you can find time for this.

  • I'm too old

Some of our most consistent students started in their 50s. BJJ rewards technique over athleticism.

  • I'll be the worst one there

You will be. For about a week. Then someone newer walks in and suddenly you're the one helping them.

  • I don't know anything

We don't expect you to. The beginners programme takes you from nothing to competent, step by step.

Common questions

How do you stop experienced students from hurting beginners?

We build a strong culture of looking after each other. Experienced students have a duty to keep newer ones safe, just like someone did for them on day one.

It's actually a myth that higher belts are the ones who hurt people. The more experienced the student, the safer you'll usually be on the mats.

What's the difference between a good school and a bad one?

A good academy runs on transparency and care. The coaches know your goals, track your progress, and treat you like a person, not a direct debit.

A bad one shows itself fast. Dirty mats, no clear standards, favouritism towards a chosen few, and coaches who show no interest in how you're getting on.

Trust your gut on your first visit.

Is this actually useful in a real-life situation?

Yes. If someone ever grabs hold of you, Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most useful things you can know. But the bigger win shows up in everyday life.

You become more confident, more resilient, and you've got a community around you when things get hard.

The person you become on the mats is the part that really changes your life.

How often do I need to train for it to actually be worth it?

That depends on what you want from it. Some people train once a week and love every minute.

Others keep their membership going even when life gets busy, just to stay part of the community.

If you want to actually progress, treat it like learning a language. You get out what you put in.

We recommend a minimum of two sessions a week for both adults and kids.
